This morning I was channel hoping and spotted 'I dream of Jeanie' on living and remembered watching it as 10 year old child. Which got me on to thinking what was the earliest comedy series I watched.
American series would have to be 'The Dick Van Dyke' show in the early 60's, which also starred Mary Tyler Moore. Then there was 'The Beverly Hillbillies' (1962),'F-Troop'(1965), 'Hogans Hero's'(1965) and 'Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in'(1967).
British series would have to be 'Hancock; (1961), 'Steptoe and Son' (1962), 'Please Sir'(1968), 'On the Buses' (1969), The Gnomes of Dulwich (1969), 'Up Pompeii' (1969), and Doctor at Large (1971).
Any that you recollect?

We used to have a 2 way intercom that my parents used as a 'baby listener' for me, and I used to go to sleep listening to 'Dick Van Dyke' and 'My Mother the Car' and 'The Horse that Talked' - which I think was properly called 'Mr Ed'.
I remember the 'Gnomes of Dulwich' - we'd just got colour tv and everyone's faces were extremely red as we kept the colour setting up as high as possible to get the most impact out of it! I remember the Gnomes being very brightly coloured - they were on BBC2 which was the only channel in colour at the time.
"My Wife Next Door' and "Father Dear Father" and of course "Terry and June" and "The Likely Lads" were the UK comedies I most remember.
